Things to do in One Day in Baku, Azerbaijan

the best things to see and do in one day in baku, azerbaijan

I didn’t expect much from Baku, to be honest, but the city impressed me in so many ways. Our plan was to make a quick one-day stop in Baku on our way from Istanbul to China to meet friends who lived there at the time. However, just after a few hours of exploration, both my partner and I were stunned by the city. Baku is an incredibly clean and well-maintained city that harmoniously blends modern architecture with historic authenticity. The city is very beautiful, and the locals are very friendly.

After spending just one day in Baku and getting a glimpse of Azerbaijan, I quickly realized that this country has so much to offer. It had never been on the top of my bucket list before, but after this brief trip, I can’t wait to go back and explore more.

So, if you’re also planning on visiting Azerbaijan and only have one day to spend in Baku, I got you covered.

In this article, I’ll share our one-day itinerary for Baku so you can make the most of your trip.

Things to See and Do in One Day in Baku

Breakfast/brunch at Merci Baku

Start your one day Baku itinerary with a delightful breakfast or brunch at Merci Baku. This cozy café is known for its delicious dishes and charming atmosphere. The menu offers a mix of traditional Azerbaijani breakfast options and international favorites, like avocado toasts. I liked a lot of the food on the menu, but in the end, I chose my favorite syrniki (cheese pancakes) and fried eggs with tomatoes dish (similar to Turkish menemen).

Explore the Old Town

Merci Baku is located within the Old Town walls, so after breakfast, continue to explore more of Icherisheher, the Old Town of Baku. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a maze of narrow alleys, historic buildings, and charming courtyards. Take a leisurely stroll through its streets to discover ancient mosques, caravanserais, and some of Baku’s main tourist attractions, like the Palace of the Shirvanshahs.

Check Out the Maiden Tower

A visit to the Maiden Tower, even just a short stop, is a must. This iconic landmark is not just a symbol of Baku but of all of Azerbaijan. The tower is shrouded in mystery (no one knows for certain when it was built, what it was built for, or even how it acquired its name) and local legends (a king built it for his daughter, which he wanted to marry, and once the tower was completed, the princess threw herself to the waves if the Caspian sea) adding an intriguing element to your visit.

You would also appreciate this Baku attraction if you are an F1 fan like me. The Maide Tower is situated along the Baku City Circus near turn 18.

Stroll Down Nizami Street

Continue your one day Baku itinerary towards Nizami Street, Baku’s main shopping avenue. Known for its vibrant atmosphere, this pedestrianized street is lined with a variety of shops, boutiques, cafes, and restaurants. Whether you’re looking for souvenirs, high-end fashion, or just want to enjoy some people-watching, Nizami Street has something for everyone. I personally very much liked the architecture, which in this part of the city reminded me a little bit of Paris.

Take a Boat Ride at Baku Mini Venice

For a unique experience, visit Baku Mini Venice located in the Seaside Boulevard. This charming attraction features a network of canals and bridges reminiscent of Venice. Hop on a gondola and enjoy a relaxing boat ride through the picturesque canals, taking in the serene surroundings and beautiful architecture.

Slide Down the Deniz Mall Iron Tunnel

If you’re up for some fun and adventure, don’t miss the Deniz Mall. This modern shopping center not only offers a variety of shops and entertainment options but also features the Iron Tunnel slide. This indoor slide is a hit among both kids and adults, providing a fun experience as you zip down the tunnel. The same mall also has a carting track, F1, and cart fans.

Visit the Carpet Museum

The Azerbaijan Carpet Museum is a fascinating place where you can learn about the country’s rich tradition of carpet weaving. The museum itself is architecturally interesting, shaped like a rolled-up carpet. Inside, you’ll find an impressive collection of carpets from different regions and eras, showcasing intricate designs and craftsmanship.

Take the Funicular to Highland Park

In the afternoon, take the funicular up to Highland Park. No matter if you have one day, one week, or one month to spend in Baku, Highland Park is a must visit. You can reach it by taxi or foot as well, but the funicular that runs from near the Carpet Museum and the Baku Promenade is an experience in itself. It offers stunning views of the city and the Caspian Sea as you ascend.

The building of the funicular is kind of funny tho. It reminds me of the Bridge of Peace in Tbilisi, which the locals there call the Always Ultra Bridge because the structure resembles a lady pad.

Enjoy the Views from Highland Park

Once you’re at the top, spend some time enjoying the panoramic views. Highland Park provides a stunning view of Baku’s skyline, the Flame Towers, and the Caspian Sea. It’s a peaceful place to relax and take some photos. The park itself is very nice and a pleasure to explore. There are also some cafes and restaurants in the area, and you can also visit the next places on my one day in Baku itinerary list.

Check Out the Shahidlar Monument & Martyr’s Lane

While at Highland Park, visit the Shahidlar Monument and Martyr’s Lane. These sites are dedicated to those who lost their lives during the Black January event and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The area is somber and reflective, offering a moment of contemplation and respect for the country’s history.
